Wheat Harvest 2015

It's late July which means it's time to harvest wheat on the farm. While we're still waiting for the corn to ripen, we'd thought we'd share some pictures of the harvest with you!

Grandpa Empkie and Uncle Brian had some special guest helpers in Anna and Charlie! They were very impressed with the machinery and eager to work - it was great to see the process through their eyes.

Picture

The first step is for the combine to thresh the wheat; cutting down the wheat and separating the grain from the head and stem (which is straw).

Anna was thrilled to ride along with Grandpa and help "drive" the combine!

Once the combine is full, the wheat is transferred through the auger into the grain cart which is pulled by the tractor.

The tractor is then driven over to transfer the wheat into the truck and grain cart to be driven into town. The grain is taken to the elevator where is sold and eventually makes its way to the mill, then to the bakers to become food we eat - bread, flour, bagels, and (according to the 3 year old Anna) the most important things - ice cream cones and cookies!

Grandma's Helpers!

The grandchildren are here on the farm this week to "help" with the wheat harvest and vegetable picking! They're hoping to get some sweet corn too! We picked a green pepper last night and promptly used it in our sloppy joes for dinner - now that's fresh!!

Anna and Charlie's first job was to help Grandma check the progress of the sweet corn 😀

The corn isn't quite ready yet, but this hot weather is helping it along!

We're getting closer to Sweet Corn...

Here is a close-up of an ear of Sweet Corn we picked today.  It's not ripe yet, but it is getting closer to ripening every day.  All the warm weather we're having is speeding up the ripening process.  Once the kernels get more plump and turn yellow it will be time to begin harvesting, and more importantly enjoying, possibly within the next week.  We'll be checking on it daily...

It was a beautiful morning at the Farmers' Market!  We had an abundant supply of our Heirloom Tomatoes, as well as a good number of our vine-ripened Hybrid Red Tomatoes.  We were able to harvest a few Green Peppers, but they didn't last very long.  Hopefully we'll soon have a few more ready to harvest.  We have begun harvesting Cucumbers, and will hopefully be able to have a continuous supply of them throughout the season.

Here you can see the stalks of Sweet Corn.  If you look closely you can see the reddish-colored corn silks of the ears of Sweet Corn on the sides of the stalks.  Hopefully we'll be picking and eating some of this delicious Sweet Corn sometime around the 1st of August.

This is a close-up picture of a tassel at the top of a cornstalk.  It has begun to drop the pollen, which lands on the corn silks at the top of the cobs,  pollenating the Sweet Corn.

In this close-up picture of the corn silk at the top of the corn cob you can see the pieces of pollen which are stuck to the silk.  Each silk is attached to a kernel of corn, and when the pollen touches that silk its kernel is pollinated, which means it will develop into an edible kernel of corn.

Take a look at these beautiful Brandywine Tomatoes ripening on the vine.  They'll be on some lucky person's table in the very near future.

Here's a Charentais Melon that's peeking out from under the foliage.  In just a few short weeks we'll be able to enjoy these sweet and flavorful melons.

The Sweet Corn has been taking advantage of the warmer weather...

The tassels are out at the top of the corn stalk and the ears of corn are developing along the sides of the stalk, with the corn silks beginning to emerge.  The corn silk starts out red in color and will turn yellow as it matures.  Soon the pollen from the tassels will fall onto the corn silks, and then we'll have pollinated Sweet Corn, which will cause the kernels to develop on the cobs.  The corn silk dries and turns brown as the ear of corn ripens.
